Why the Summer Holiday Period Doesnt Have to Be Slow

David2017-07-174 min read

It’s that time of year again and both the roads and offices are a little quieter. The summer holidays are here and this notoriously slow part of the year can be quite frustrating with most teams and HR missing important players for two weeks or more.

This can be a frustrating period for those of us who are left behind, and although it has a lot of advantages – cheaper holidays later in the year, a shorter commute, it does mean you end up working during the slowest period and may find there isn’t much to do! This is especially noticeab

Make a Great First Impression on a Candidate

David2017-07-105 min read

When you find a potentially interesting candidate for a role you are recruiting, whether they are someone you find online or someone who is already on your recruitment database, but who you haven’t personally spoken to, you are obviously going to be keen to get them on the phone and pitch the job to them. What many recruiters forget when contacting new candidates for the first time is just how many recruitment agents an acti

Why It’s Sometimes OK to Break the ‘Two Page CV’ Rule

David2017-07-055 min read

As a recruiter, you see more CVs than just about any other professional and have a pretty good idea about what works and what doesn’t. However, one thing many managers find surprising when they are hiring for a new role is the low quality of the writing and layout of the CVs of even quite senior and experienced people. As one manager in the IT industry once told me, ‘Don’t people get taught how to do this in school anymore?’.

Well, whether they do or not, there is plenty of advice online from professional writers and employers about ho

3 Ways to Make Weekly Team Meetings More Useful

David2016-09-014 min read

The majority of teams have a weekly slot where they get together and have an update meeting, with even remote workers often dialling in to touch base with everybody else. However, these meetings seem to vary between different workplaces from being motivating, efficient and useful, to being a weekly drag that everybody tries to get out of so they can get on with what they were doing. It is really important for teams to have regular sessions together and a weekly team meeting can be a very good idea, but it is just as important to ensure that

Why Your Facebook Page Isn't Working

David2016-07-285 min read

For several years now it has seemed like every piece of marketing advice you can find insists that every business has a Facebook page and a Twitter account, for the purposes of that dark art known as ‘social media marketing’. On the face of it, this makes a lot of sense – after all having a Facebook page is free, and just about everyone you want to market to as a recruiter is on Facebook – likewise Twitter. However, if you have been using these social networks as part of your marketing strategy for some time now as a free tool by posting con

Job Descriptions & Compulsory Requirements

David2016-07-264 min read

When it comes to the requirements on job descriptions, those of us who have seen enough candidates placed without meeting the exact ‘mandatory’ requirements for educational qualifications or years of experience know that there are certain things that can be taken with a pinch of salt – they are ‘nice to haves’ rather than essentials that the employer absolutely must see on every CV they’ll consider. However, candidates can often be less experienced in working out what is really important on a job spec, and listing something like a Master’s d
